I don't remember if I ever even told anybody about this game, I forgot about it until I was going through old stuff tonight and found it. The game kind of sucks, I remember spending a couple months working on it full-time (college summer) instead of and feeling incredibly bad about it. In retrospect I think it might be bad in remediable ways, though, so maybe i'll try to do something with it.

I LOVE THIS but i suck so bad at it, i only made it to 2218m (got the rifle, pissed off a horde of pigulatrons and autumnal oaks)

you should call this game Straight Shot and there should be archways and landmines and extra lives and mix-and-match weapons like Gunstar Heroes and a melee weapon that isn't a pocketknife you keep in your mouth because it's so short-range and i kept getting my chops busted

OH NO SHIT I JUST BEAT THE GAME THAT WAS AWESOME

i'm lucky i don't suck so bad at weird games like Hotdog Storm or the chiggermech's SUPER LAZER would have probably fucked me up so hard i don't even know (did you make those noises yourself? "REHH!" it was hilarious)

guys: if you try to use the pistol alone, you will die, guaranteed. you need the level 3 spread bare-minimum if you want to survive, and don't neglect the needler either. the rifle takes some dedication but it's well worth it because of its unrivaled anti-pigulatron capacity

haha, well the thing about autumnal oaks is that they are much crankier than vernal oaks as they sense and fear the coming winter. Actually you were about 2/3 through, it's not very long.

Here's what I think I want to change, it should be a pretty big overhaul:

- No health, no instant game-over. Get a bunch of lives & 1-hit kills like classic shooters.
- most enemies die in 1 hit.
- No ammo, no weapon collection or levels. Weapons are powerups that last for a fixed period of time. All weapons shoot automatically all the time.
- No forward / backward. Maybe have a system where you can stand behind cover & it pushes you back so eventually you have to leave, then your character automatically runs forward to the normal position.
- Some kind of bomb.
- random level generation
- 2 player (this requires simplified because of limited space + keyboards suck at detecting many simultaneous presses, the above puts me at only 3 keys each).
- Hire an artist
- port to as3

essentially I would save some infrastructural code and redesign everything else.

especially this. many emulated arcade games are impossible to 2p co-op on because MAME doesn't support gamepads (at least, it doesn't support the x360 controller).

also i kind of liked the weapon-leveling thing, it gave me a reason to shoot at things instead of darting around them; a friend of mine just played it and all he did was run up the sides of the levels, which only postponed the inevitable assbeating he'd receive because he didn't level Spread. but if everything is to die in one hit from hereon out, then yeah to hell with it because there's just no point anymore.

have a character named Fartfeaster and he's this guy that looks like the lead singer of Gogol Bordello and he runs backwards through the levels bare-ass farting on people, and another character named Scrod the Unholy and he's this evil priest who wears a leopard-print speedo and latex bandoliers with christmas bells on them
